Update on Universal Free Meals Discussion

New York State implemented a “free meals for all students” program beginning in the 2025-2026 school year. To be eligible for this funding, school districts must participate in the Nation School Lunch program. During the 2025-2026 school year, the District’s Food Service Committee was charged with assessing the feasibility of transitioning into the National School Lunch program, the impacts of such change on our existing program, and making a recommendation to the Board of Education.

After several months of diligent research and robust discussion, including a survey of families, the majority of Food Service Committee members believes that our current program provides the district with more flexibility to address the priorities of our community in relation to food quality, menu variety, and locally developed nutritional guidelines.  The committee believes the advantages of joining the NSLP – namely “free meals” for all students – will require changes to our food program and school operations that will result in a net negative impact for our students.  Therefore, the committee did not recommend joinging the NSLP.

A summary of the committee’s work can be found here: Google Doc
