Film Editing

As a result of my Senior Options experience I hope to learn about editing from professionals and practice the art with their assistance. As a further result of this experience I expect to produce my own edited version of a piece of work on which my sponsor is presently working. My goal is to see if this, in fact, a major and career I might pursue.

My Essential Question will be: How does film editing influence an audience’s reaction to a movie?

During the first week I can only work on site part time because of the 3 AP exams I am preparing to take. Because I take studio art, statistics, and Spanish, I will have 12 hours to devote during the week of 5/5/08. During that first week I will spend those 12 hours acclimating myself to the studio. After the first week I will be able to work full time until Senior Options is done. I will be assigned to different editors to observe their work and start to learn techniques. I will learn the differences between analog and digital film editing. I will get to practice both techniques. My sponsor has assured me that I will be given old work on which to practice what I have learned. I will also read various manuals and books on the subject by Karl Reisz and Gavin Millar, Ken Dancyger, and Charles Koppelman. I will also interview a friend’s father who is a professional film editor.

During the part of Senior Options when I am there full time, in addition to the work described above, I will be given a small portion of a scene from a current movie my sponsor’s company is working on to edit my own way. At the end of the project, I will be able to show my work to my sponsor and his colleagues. If they think my edited portion works better, they have promised me they will use it in the final cut. Of course, not all of my experience will be this glorious. I also will do cataloging, indexing, running errands, sorting, and cleaning. I have already been told the need to have a neat and clean studio. Helping them maintain their standard will be part of my job there.

As a result of my time spent on site I will be able to demonstrate all that I have learned as well as show, for the first time, my professionally edited version of the scene from the movie my sponsor is presently editing. I would also like to answer my essential question by testing how my version might influence the thinking of the audience as compared to the original.

My sponsor, Mr. Hal E. Wood, has assured me that he will be there every step of the way as my supervisor. He will check my progress, instruct me, and critique my work. Often times, because he must fly to Los Angeles he will assign his assistant, Ms. Yuni Versal as my immediate supervisor. As I said earlier, I will often assist the other editors in every way they need me. I expect to have to do certain chores that all interns must do in return for an opportunity to learn the craft I have always been interested in learning.
