PETITION REQUIREMENTS FOR EXTENDED INDEPENDENT STUDY


If you wish to increase your independent study hours to more than 10 hours you must petition the Senior Options Committee for consideration of your proposal:

1. Design a proposal clearly identifying the number of hours you will be spending at your internship and the number of hours you will be spending in self-directed study.

2. Provide a detailed explanation of rationale and schedule of self-directed hours.

3. Student must have a sponsor with expertise and responsibilities in your area of interest.

4. The mentor must agree and sign off on the rationale and plan for the rebalancing of internship/independent hours.

5. The mentor must state in writing that he/she is willing to put in the extra time necessary to adequately monitor a student who has opted to do an independent project.

6. Meet with the Senior Options Committee to present this written proposal. You will meet with a panel of 2-3 teachers who will read the written proposal carefully, making suggestions and asking questions. Be prepared to persuade your audience that your proposal outlines an independent project that will require sufficient hours, will be a worthwhile learning experience and will include a specific method of accountability,
