Welcome to Greenacres School
The Scarsdale School District is celebrating 225 years of educational excellence. The current Greenacres School has been a proud part of that history since 1916. We are the oldest elementary school in the District with a rich architectural heritage. Over the last number of years we have been working hard at preserving that heritage, renewing our mechanical systems, strengthening the existing structure and
making improvements to the fabric of the building. If you were a former student and came back to visit, you would notice how light and bright the décor has become, making for a very positive learning environment. As part of our renewal, we are revamping the main courtyard with a design by David Russo, Landscape Architect. The new wave bench will be installed there early in 2010 and we are looking forward to the plantings in the springtime. The courtyard will become a tremendous resource, expanding our public and instructional spaces. As a returnee, you would also notice our archival display at the main entrance. We have been on a trajectory to preserve representations of our history. We have photos and mementos that span from the 1930s to the present day. Feel free to drop by and help us document events and people in those photos.
At the same time that we are looking to preserve our history, we are also looking forward to the challenges of the 21st century. You will find Greenacres alive with excitement about learning. The introduction of the Singapore Math program has sparked a renewed interest in math instruction. Teachers and students are committed to learning this new approach that focuses on mastery of concepts and problem solving. Similarly, our work in Balanced Literacy continues to enliven English Language Arts instruction. Our students are excellent learners; reading, writing, speaking and listening with accomplishment. An inquiry approach in the other subject areas is proving to be both motivating and rewarding. In addition to these subject areas, we offer a wide array of Arts and Music opportunities within the curriculum. Partnering with the PTA, we are able to provide additional experiences for our students. They have opportunities to act, dance, learn in new ways, try new things, and be involved with people with special talents. What a rich environment for learning.
