Al Gore Launches WE Campaign
Former vice president Al Gore announced yesterday a three-year, multi-million dollar campaign to change public opinion about global warming. The campaign is nicknamed “WE” and its message is that the U.S. has to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
The campaign will use several strategies to try to change public opinion. Advertising, online organizing and grassroots projects will all be a part of the campaign’s effort to get the attention of federal lawmakers.
Cathy Zoi is the CEO of the Alliance for Climate Protection. She said, "We're trying to get a movement happening to switch public opinion so that our leaders feel, 'Wow! We really need to make this a top priority issue.'"
One of the features of the campaign is that it has the support of all people not just Democrats or Republicans. People who may have very different political agendas will be featured in commercials together. Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will be doing a commercial with former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.
The Alliance for Climate Protection will spend at least $300 million over the next three years. Mr. Gore is a major contributor. He has donated the $750,000 award he won for his Nobel Peace Prize, and he has also contributed a personal matching gift.
The “WE” campaign believes that most Americans care about the environment and want to do something to save it but they don’t know what to do. The campaign will provide some basic strategies for decreasing energy use at home, at work and at school.
The Girl Scouts of America have already signed on to the campaign. All 2.7 million members will take a climate action pledge.
